Construction of a dynamic protective barrier is currently underway in the area below Devín Castle. The barrier addresses risks caused by natural erosion of the rock massif, which became particularly evident during the rockfall in 2017. This project is essential to ensure the safety of the riverside road.
Closures and Detours
Since September 2025, the section of Slovanské nábrežie between the parking area below Devín Castle and the Brána slobody (Gate of Freedom) monument has been closed. Pedestrians are redirected to a temporary detour route, which runs along a stabilized gravel surface (the detour is barriered and includes steps to overcome height differences). Cyclists can use an alternative route along the Morava River, exiting near the cemetery on Kremeľská Street. Due to these detours, we kindly ask visitors to allow extra time when planning their visit to the castle area, especially for large groups, strollers, or persons with reduced mobility.
The design of the detour routes has been implemented to balance safety with cost-effectiveness. The closure is expected to end in November 2025.
Purpose and Benefits of the Project
The construction of a barrier, which will be 5 meters high and 100 meters long, responds to natural erosion of the rock cliff. This project will ensure the safety and protection of the riverside road from falling rocks while respecting the landscape and historical character of the area.
Construction Process
Work is ongoing continuously along the road and includes drilling anchors directly into the castle cliff. Construction continues during weekends to minimize the duration of the closure. The site is managed according to strict safety standards, particularly considering the risk of falling rocks or tools during climbers’ work on the cliff. Its layout cannot be adjusted due to the nature of the cliff work. The goal is to complete the project as quickly as possible with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
Patience During Construction
We are aware that the restrictions may cause temporary inconvenience, especially during the tourist season. Nevertheless, we believe that this short-term discomfort will bring long-term benefits in the form of a safer environment and the protection of cultural heritage.
