Natural Assets

The Devín castle rock is a protected territory of European importance. Austrian wormwood, a rare species of the Ice Age grows here. Devin is the only place of its occurrence in Slovakia. The recovered pastures help preserve its biotope. Among the rare species wallcreepers live here. Their beaks extend like hummingbirds and with red patterns and white dots on their wings.

Natural riches

The most admired natural treasure of Devín is the early Lumnitzer’s carnation with its white flowers. However, on the south-western slope below the walls, where the amphitheatre is deserted, grows an overlooked but no less rare steppe species – the Austrian wormwood.

Natural pasture

The first to graze the meadows below Devín were herds of large herbivores – bison, prairie dogs, wild horses – whose activity was followed by man. He grazed his cattle in the same places where wild animals had previously grazed. Grazing also contributed significantly to the castle’s key function of defence.
