Archaeological research
The first steps of researchers were motivated by finding Dowina – the seat of Prince Rastislav. The very first findings by the archaeologist Inocent Ladislav Červinka in the castle at the beginning of the 20th century indicated that there was a very high probability that the research was going in the right direction. However, cultural and historical layers of Devín are much more interwoven and broader, reach far beyond the tradition of Great Moravia, and for archaeologists it still represents a great challenge. Some important discoveries are unparalleled in the region of the middle Danube River.
Research history
In 2023 it will be exactly 110 years since the beginning of archaeological research at Devín. It has been delayed by several interruptions, but it is still one of the oldest and longest-lasting archaeological researches in Slovakia, during which a number of significant discoveries have been made.
What we are working on
The latest archaeological research, which is being carried out on the site of the planned construction of a new administrative centre at Devín Castle, brings some stimulating discoveries. It is a continuation of the research conducted by Katarína Harmadyová between 2017 and 2021. It’s just to the left as you enter Devín Castle.
