History Come Alive

History Come Alive aims to present the significant periods in the history of Devín Castle in an engaging and interactive way, spanning from prehistory to antiquity, the early and high Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque period, and the time of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The rich program will consist of fencing and musical performances, lectures and accompanying activities aimed at children and adult visitors. Various period tent camps will be built in the area of Devín Castle – freely accessible to visitors with the opportunity to take photos with the performers in costumes, interactive period children’s games and period activities, as well as the presentation of period crafts. Food stalls emphasize traditional and period dishes (regional specialties, period cuisine).

 

PROGRAM

Saturday, June 29, 2024

10:00 AM – Gates Open

10:30 AM – Official Opening – Parade
Ceremonial parade of the performing groups to the main stage, presentation of the program, and a short demonstration by each group (fencing duel, etc.).

11:30 AM – Young Bears
Performance by children from the historical fencing club. The program includes a joint fencing exercise „kata“, duels, and a comedy play for children, „Medieval Boar Hunt.“

12:30 PM – LEGIO XIIII GMV (CZ) – Fencing Show
Demonstration of the Roman legionaries’ drill routines and battle formations.

1:00 PM – Reveal the secrets of Glagolitic – Radomír Jelínek (Tri Jelene)
Lecture on the history of the oldest Slavic script + workshop

2:30 PM – ŠDS Argyll – Fencing Show
Demonstration of duels and formations from the early medieval period and reconstruction of Norman life in the 12th century.

3:00 PM – KVH Carpathia
A historical lecture and archery demonstration.

3:30 PM – SHŠ Ursus – Fencing Show
Fencing duels from the High Middle Ages (15th century).

4:00 PM – The Mystery of the Devín Horse (Pavol Jelínek)
A historical lecture.

5:30 PM – Fratres in Armis (CZ) – Fencing Show
Fencing duels from the Renaissance period, including demonstrations of Landsknecht duels.

6:00 PM – Musica Ursusica in Concert
Concert of period music featuring world music, medieval, and Renaissance songs.

6:30 PM – Closing Ceremony

7:00 PM – End of the Event and Castle Closing

An interactive activity for visitors—knight training and a staged battle with knights using foam swords.

1:30 PM – AMIS Historical Cooking – Lecture
History lecture on everyday life and the role of women in the Middle Ages.

3:00 PM – SHŠ Ursus – Fencing Show
Fencing duels from the High Middle Ages (15th century).

3:30 PM – AMIS Historical Cooking
Workshop for children focused on medieval shopping.

5:00 PM – ŠDS Argyll – Fencing Show
Demonstration of duels and formations from the early medieval period and reconstruction of Norman life in the 12th century.

5:30 PM – Musica Ursusica in Concert
Concert of period music featuring world music, medieval, and Renaissance songs.

6:30 PM – Closing Ceremony

Other activities:

  • Period Camps – historical tents, furniture, props, flags. There will be one open tent with furniture for visitors to enter and get a closer look at the equipment.
  • Demonstration of Weapons – various weapons (swords, sabers, dusacks, axes, etc.) will be exhibited on stands for demonstration, photographs, and, if interested, professional explanations of their histories.
  • Games for Children – Children can enjoy activities such as ring/horseshoe throwing, spin ladder, ball throwing, wooden pétanque, chess, fishing (for younger children), hopscotch, a wooden game of concentration, foam sticks, and stilts.
  • Historical Shooting Range, Wooden Carousel, Minting Station
  • Demonstration of Period Crafts: candle making, smithery, joinery, herbalism, typography
